A recent report indicates that manufacturers sold a greater number of Smartphones than PCs during the last quarter of last year (2010), a change much earlier than thought.

Over the last three months of 2010, mobile phone makers sold nearly 101 million smartphones, according to the report by International Data Corp. An increase of 87% over the same period last year.

At the same time, sales of PCs only reached 92 million units. An increase of less than 3% over the same period last year.

It is worth mentioning that many analysts had expected the smartphones to take be in first place sometime in 2011. But as you can see the change occurred earlier than thought, thanks largely to the explosion of Android devices.

While revealing their results, IDC analysts noted that the growth has been helped by the Android smartphone growing market. Which became the most important device for many companies and a major rival to Symbian.

In the last months of the year Android exceeded iOS  and Symbian as the operating system most used in the world. But this is also due to the large number of mobile devices that use this system.

Despite this, sales of Nokia and Symbian were kept in front. But failed to a 20% market share, compared to 28% achieved a year earlier.

If we focus on what matters, profit and revenue, Apple is in the best position. Because many of Nokia products are cheaper and therefore generate less profit per product sold.

  1. I don’t think that smartphones will take over PC’s core market either, because you can’t use them to do to do complex stuff that require of a fast processor and/or keyboard and mouse. You can’t do things such as use Photoshop, CAD, Web Design, etc.

But I don’t think that’s the reason (that most people already have a PC) people are not buying PC’s. I think it’s part of the reason, but they are buying more smartphones because: First, they need a cell phone and second, most people only do basic stuff on a computer such as browse online, chat, social network, etc. They can do all that stuff from wherever they are with a smartphone that they can carry wherever they go.

  2. Gustavo, I agree with you but would add that smartphones and notepads will eventually be able to do those things – run photoshop, CAD & web design software… eventually.
