How to Improve Our Wi-Fi Connection

no thumb

Wireless technology to connect different computing devices has been around for a while now. But this technology was able to reach the mass audience only when the hardware became affordable for everyone.

Wi-Fi
The fact of the matter is that to achieve the maximum performance from wireless via Wi-Fi, we must take into consideration a number of factors that are very important. These factors makes the difference between a “working” connection and a “fast” connection.

In this article you will learn some of the tips that allow us to connect to Internet at the highest speed possible. We’ll also talk about certain security practices that will be very useful to reach our goal of reaching the highest speed possible.

The location of the transmitter

Perhaps one of the things we should pay more attention is the location of Wi-Fi transmitter. If you have it located in the wrong place, it will not deliver the best signal quality.

We should locate the Wi-Fi transmitter device in a cabinet that it’s above the floor. While doing this, we should keep an eye of any metallic surface in between the transmitter and the PC, as this items will degrade the quality of the signal.

Try to put the transmitter away from any items with metallic surfaces. If possible, we should also place the device away from cordless phones or microwave ovens.

Improve the transmission distance

In the event that we did not have good reception somewhere in our home or office, the best we can do is to implement the use of a signal repeater.

Get the best Wi-Fi signal possible

If we want to optimize our signal reception, one of the best ways which we can do it is to use a type of network software rate from Wireshark. It will be of great utility to get the best Wi-Fi signal.

WPA encryption

Also very useful method is to use WPA encryption. A great utility in terms of connection security to WEP.

List of access devices with MAC addresses

If you are of the persons that uses too many connections through the same line, then it becomes necessary to create an access list of devices with MAC addresses. This will allow us to limit the unauthorized use of our wireless network.

    1. I have my router in my room and I’m always on my laptop on the living room and I also have my PS3 in my living room, which is divided by like 3 walls. The reception for the laptop used to be 3 bars out of 5 and my PS3 only got like 33%. After I upgraded my router and optimized it, I was able to have 5 bars and over 60% on my PS3.

I don’t really think the wall should be much of a problem. The items affecting it more are the wireless phone and the microwave. Maybe if you moved it you could get at least 1 more bar.

My older router was like over 5 years old. I’m not sure how old is your router, but maybe you could buy a new one. That improved my wireless connection, and the price was less than half the cost of my older one.

  1. I actually bought an extension cable so I could position the router in another room, as it had to get to the other end of the house through several walls. It still wasn’t the best and I didn’t want to spend the extra money to get a repeater so I bought a bigger antennae with the proviso that if it didn’t work I would swap it for the repeater. It worked fine.

  2. Great post, it’s definitely important to take all these factors into consideration when trying to improve your WiFi connection. It’s extremely frustrating when you’re in the middle of something like streaming a video and then your Internet suddenly times out. There are ways to boost your WiFi connection, however, like finding the best router position, upgrading your hardware and using the latest drivers. 1. Depending on what type of internet connection and/or which internet provider you have, the internet speed will decrease during peak hours.

  3. Like me, im reading this article in starbucks having great coffee while on the net via wifi. I simply like like it. Wifi makes me go from house/office and still do my work. 🙂

  4. I keep my router upstairs, right above the living room where I do most of my work. The wifi is kind of slow when I’m working in the living room. When I work upstairs, the internet is a lot faster. I’ve been thinking of moving the router into the living room to get a faster connection.
